Pro-Life Sermon 4

Given by Fr. Kevin Drew of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Missouri: On November 14 th , 1940, five-hundred and fifteen small twin-engine German bombers dropped 500 tons of explosive on the industrial city of Coventry, England. Two thirds of the city were damaged. There was such a high level of destruction that the German propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels later coined the term “coventried” when describing similar destruction in other enemy towns. “Coventried.”  The Coventry Cathedral, a soaring beautiful gothic cathedral built in the 14 th century was fire- bombed and destroyed that night in 1940. The next month, on Christmas the BBC ended a radio program by having people sing in the bombed-out ruins of the cathedral. The broadcast made popular once again an old lullaby with sad lyrics and a haunting melody known as the Coventry Carol. It was written back in the 1500’s as part of a nativity play, when England was still Catholic; before the tyrant King Henry VIII confi...

Holy Innocents

Image
Vespers hymn from the 1962 Roman Missal: Flowers of Martyrdom, all hail! Smitten by the tyrant foe On life's threshold, as the gale Strews the roses ere they blow. First to bleed for Christ, sweet Lambs! What a simple death ye died! Sporting with your wreaths and palms, At the very altar side. Honor, glory, virtue, merit Be to Thee, O Virgin's Son! With the Father and the Spirit While eternal ages run. Amen V. Under the throne of God, all the Saints cry: R. Avenge our blood, O our God.

Candle for Life Campaign

I, alas, won't be able to go on the March for Life this year. However, I would like to share with you a fundraiser by the group I went with in 2018, the Institute of Christ the King. Dear Friends, For the fourth year in a row, the priests of the  Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest   will be leading a group of courageous pilgrims to the  March for Life in Washington D.C.   this January, 2020. We have a tremendous opportunity this year to fill two buses of young pilgrims from the Institute's parishes. Young people from all over the Midwest will march and pray together. More than  just a March, the Institute leads our trip in the spirit of a true pilgrimage, offering our young adults opportunities to pray, to make sacrifices, and to learn about the mystery of the unborn through masses, rosaries, conferences etc. As we witness an up-rise of the power of darkness against the most precious and mo...

Last Rights, Scapulars, and Nursing School

Image
The latest in my nursing school news.      I started classes at the beginning of September. First was Anatomy and Physiology, which was done at the end of September. We then began Basic Nursing, part of which includes ethics, legal aspects and culture/religion.      When we were on the subject of ethics, I brought up the question of refusing to do something that would violate one's conscience. Specifically, I wanted to know if there would be any legal repercussions if I, as a student nurse, refused to do something at a clinical. My specific example was birth control, the only pertinent one for the context.      It boiled down to, no, nothing would happen if I was asked to do something that I wasn't comfortable doing (such as distribute birth control) and refused to do it. It is, of course, more than a matter of comfort, but I didn't press the issue; there was no need.     ...

The Restaurant of Mistaken Orders

Image
This is a very pro-life concept. These people are people , and are treated here with dignity. From  openculture.com : If you've ever been to Japan, you'll know that in Japanese restaurants, mistakes are not made. And on the off chance that a mistake is made, even a trivial one, the lengths that proprietors will go to make things right with their customers must, in the eyes of a Westerner, be seen to be believed. But as its name suggests, the Tokyo pop-up Restaurant of Mistaken Orders does things a bit differently. "You might think it's crazy. A restaurant that can't even get your order right," says its English introduction page. "All of our servers are people living with dementia. They may, or may not, get your order right." Un-Japanese though that concept may seem at first, it actually reflects realities of Japanese society in the 21st century: Japan has an aging population with an already high proportion of elderly people, and that puts ...

America, You Are Not Free!

"Thus saith the Lord: A voice was heard on high of lamentation, of mourning, and weeping, of Rachel weeping for her children, and refusing to be comforted for them, because they are not."        -- Jeremiah 31:15  From Marian Helper , Summer 2019, p. 36: Upon the passage of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion throughout the country, the Marian Fathers had this to say in our Summer 1973 issue of  the Marian Helpers Bulletin. America,  You Are Not  Free! "Your children within you ..." St. Luke, Ch. 19, v, 43       Newsweek, October 5, 1970, carried an article on "Abortion in New York", and in the statistics of the article were the following:          Operations................................................................................................................................ 20,000      Deaths....................................

Pro-Life Novena

La Visitation  by Philippe de Champaigne From a pamphlet published (with a Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur) by Youth for Life, an Austrian organization: First day: For the recognition of man in the image of God God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Gen. 1:27) Let us pray. Eternal Father, You have created man in Your own image and breathed into him an immortal soul. You Son has offered up His life for the salvation of each on of us. Grant that the world may recognize that You are the origin and ground of human dignity. For Your sake, may they come to love, honor and protect the life of every human being -- from the first moment of their conception until their natural death. We ask this in the name of Christ, our Lord. Amen. Second day: For the recognition of the family as the basic unit of society And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. (Luke 2:17) L...
